Banbridge Council is browned off by bin contamination

In recent weeks the council has noticed a significant increase in the level of contamination originating from certain areas.

Despite being widely promoted as a scheme designed for the collection of food and garden waste only, some households are still failing to put the correct items in their brown bin and this is ruining the efforts of others.

Council waste management officer Barry Patience commented, “The brown bin collection scheme contributes significantly to the ongoing improvement of waste management in the district, reducing the amount of waste going to landfill and the annual waste disposal bill.

Contamination, which can be very costly to the ratepayer and the environment, can be easily avoided by simply placing the correct items in the brown bin for recycling.

“We know which areas are giving rise to the problem and we will be working with households in those areas to prevent further contamination. As well as inspecting more bins in those areas, we will be placing notices on bins with a view to making householders aware that their area has been identified as one of concern. The householders in these areas will need to be more careful when putting items in their brown bin.”

Brown bins found to be contaminated will be rejected and a contamination notice will be placed on each bin. The householder will be responsible for removing the contaminated items from the brown bin.
