Ban and fine for local speeder

A 24-year-old Katesbridge driver who was caught speeding 70mph in a 30mph area has been banned for three months and fined £100.

Jason Hillis from Tanvally Road, Katesbridge pleaded guilty to the charge at last week’s local Magistrates court.

Deputy District Judge Mr O’Hare imposed the disqualification after being told Hillis had a previous relevant record.

A PPS prosecutor explained how Hillis came to the attention of police who were on mobile patrol on 5 September 5, 2013.

They travelled behind the Golf car that he was driving and noted he was doing speeds of 70mph which was 30mph in excess of the limit.

Officers followed Hillis along the Rathfriland Road and signalled for him to stop which he did at the Derrylough junction.

When officers explained their observations, he apologised and said he would accept a fixed penalty.

The court heard that the Fixed Penalty Office was later unable to deal with the matter as the speed was over the threshold.

Hillis was also ordered to pay an offender’s levy of £15.
