Baby deaths report due

AN interim report into the Pseudomonas outbreak that claimed the life of a Londonderry baby in December is due to be presented to the Health Minister Edwin Poots at the end of this month with a full report expected eight weeks later.

The Health Minister said urgent actions will be taken once the report is available.

He was responding to an Assembly Question on the Pseudomonas outbreak, which claimed the lives of four babies in Londonderry and Belfast, including Caoimhe Campbell and Gavin Burke’s son 10-day-old son Caolan on December 14.

Following the tragedies Mr Poots commissioned an independent review of the Pseudomonas infection in neonatal units.

He said: “At this stage I cannot comment on technical areas such as these that will form part of the investigations of the review team into the reasons for the incidents and actions taken.

“I have asked for an interim report by the end of March so that urgent actions can be taken and have asked for the final report to be presented no more than eight weeks after the interim report at which time I will bring the report to the Assembly.”
