ASBO threat for some Rathfriland teenagers

YOUNG people who continue to wreak havoc in a Rathfriland graveyard have been warned by Police that ASBOs could be issued if the problems don't stop.

The age-old issue has reared its head again at St. John’s graveyard, just off John Street in the town with young people gathering late at nite drinking and causing anti-social behaviour.

Residents say they are totally fed up with the problem, which escalates at weekends, and want it stamped out before the longer evenings arrive.

One Cross Heights resident told the Leader,”This problem of young people terrorising the graveyard dates back years, but us locals are sick to death of it. We want it stopped immediately and hope the police can finally bring it under control.

“As soon as the bright nights arrive, so do the yobs, armed with carryouts. These are young teenagers, some as young as 13 and 14. They drink, play music on their mobiles and tramp about over the graves, scattering flowers and dropping rubbish.”

A PSNI spokesman said, “Police are working closely with partner agencies and residents in order to tackle the ongoing issue of anti-social behaviour in the area.

“Proactive policing operations have occurred and will continue to occur in this area to detect and deter young people involved in anti-social behaviour.

“All information gleaned by police during these operations, if it relates to young people, is passed to the Youth Diversion Officer.

“If young persons continue to come to the attention of police then parents will receive letters advising of same and police will not hesitate to move toward Acceptable Behavioural Contacts and ASBOs if necessary should their behaviour continue.”

However the spokesman stressed the importantance of reporting all incidents of anti-social behaviour to police.

“Every call is important to us. Police would like to reassure our community that they are doing their utmost to robustly deal with anti-social behaviour in whatever form it presents itself.
