Appeal for vigilance as councillor condemns theft

DROMORE Councillor Hazel Gamble has condemned the recent theft of heating oil and diesel from Edentrillick Quarries.

As reported last week, thieves made off with some 8,000 litres, worth about £6,500, from the Dromore quarry.

Sometime between 9pm on Friday, July 6 and 7.45am on Saturday, the thieves entered the Lagangreen Road quarry and used an on-site JCB to remove security boulders from the entrance.

They then stole an almost full tank of heating oil and removed several thousand litres of red diesel from various locations in the quarry.

DUP Councillor Ms. Gamble urged everyone to be vigilant and report suspicious activity to police, who have appealed for information from anyone who noticed any unusual activity in the area overnight July 6/7 or anyone offered fuel at a reduced price.

“I was very concerned,” she said, “to learn of the recent burglary of fuel at Edentrillick Quarries. The amount of fuel stolen was substantial and the method employed, using the JCB to clear the entrance, would suggest a well thought out and planned robbery.

“I have spoken to the PSNI, who are investigating the incident, and I would strongly urge everyone to be vigilant, both in terms of protecting their own property and reporting any suspicious activity to the PSNI.”

Information to police on 0845 600 8000, or it can be passed anonymously to the independent charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
