Annual Fair Day parade

THE annual Fair Day of Markethill Horse and Pony Driving Club Ltd. will be held in Markethill on Saturday August 18.

Beginnning with the opening parade of horse and pony drawn vehicles at 11 a.m. from the Main Street and Fairgreen Road junction, a parade will follow of all those who wish to dress in period costumes from the early 1900’s.

Upon their return the vintage vehicles will once again this year be lead by Eamonn McAleenan’s 101 year old steam engine. Music items on the Main stage will be provided by The Brook Boys from 10 a.m. and after the opening parade by the Markethill Fiddlestick Orchestra.

Their will also be butter churning and soda farls on the griddle, a demonstration of flax to linen, Irish, Scottish and Line Dancing demonstrations, corn threshing, and lots of stalls for the general public to browse around.

If you wish to bring a stall you will need to contact Betty Stewart by phone on 028 3755 1257 or mobile number 07912883943 to obtain a permit to enable you to gain access to the stall holders area. There will also be a window dressing competition for all business premises owners and we would encourage all shop owners to once again this year to do a window display. Prizes will be awarded for 1st, 2nd and 3rd place in the window display and all those who have dressed in period costume will also be eligible to win a prize.

All children who dress up will receive a medal and a prize. Entertainment will also be provided for the children to enjoy.

This year’s main attraction will be Derek Ryan and his band on the Main Stage from 3 to 5 p.m. The closing parade will commence at 5 p.m. from the top of Main street/ Fairgreen road junction. All those who participate in both parades will receive a souvenir mug at the main stage so come along and participate or spectate and make this day once again a great day out for everyone. The club would once again ask everyone where possible to support the traders who have supported us with adverts in our Fair Day programme which is on sale in McFarlands, Centra, Therese’s and Haffeys - a great read with a chance to win £30 if your book number is drawn at the main stage prior to the closing parade.
