Mr Anderson said he had been approached by local residents over the matter and spoke of his shock at the amount of dog fouling on the pathways of Tandragee Road, Gilford.

“This vicinity is frequented regularly by walkers and runners and no one wants to see the footpaths being blighted in this way,” he said.

“I am also concerned that this is taking place because I know that there are a number of young children who live in the area and this dog fouling poses a health and safety risk.

“I will be liaising with my council colleagues to ensure that this problem is cleaned up and I will also be presenting the need for more action to be taken against the dog owners who are not taking responsibility for their animals.”

Mr Timothy Mayes, Chairman of Gilford Concerned Residents Group also spoke of his concerns.

“The issue of extensive dog fouling on the Tandragee Road was raised at a recent meeting of Gilford Concerned Residents Group,” he said. “We in GCRG are taking this problem seriously and are committed to liaising with Mr Anderson and his colleagues to ensure that this issue is properly dealt with.

“Not only does dog fouling negatively impact on the image of the village, but it poses health and safety concerns for the children living in the area. We have asked Mr Anderson to look into increasing dog litter bins in the vicinity.”
