Mr Anderson said: “In recent weeks I have been contacted by local residents who are unhappy about this recent overgrowth of weeds in Gilford, particularly along the railings at Ann Street/High Street and in the general area.

“Whilst I was onsite surveying the weed growth I observed the watering of hanging baskets in the village and yet just across the street there is a notable overgrowth of weeds.

“I feel that it defeats the purpose of having beautiful hanging baskets when the village’s appearance continues to be undermined with the weeds issue.

“Until action is taken to deal with this matter Gilford’s appearance will not be as it should.

“In recent weeks I also submitted a written question to the Infrastructure Minister regarding weed spraying and grass cutting. Minister Hazzard’s answer informed me that a full program of weed spraying had commenced in Upper Bann with further spraying as required throughout the season.

“I will be writing to the Minister to highlight this particular case and I will ask him to help resolve this weeds problem in Gilford.”

Chairman of Gilford Concerned Residents Group Timothy Mayes said: “The residents of Gilford want to see the weeds problem being effectively dealt with and we are grateful to Sydney Anderson MLA and his colleague Cllr Buckley for their efforts thus far to try and resolve this matter. We now hope that the relevant authorities will take action to resolve the weeds issue.”
