Ancient skill taught at Whitehead’s Diamond Jubilee Wood
Participants have been learning more about the ancient skill of hedge laying at Diamond Jubilee Wood in Whitehead.
Alison Diver, Growing Communities officer, Mid and East Antrim Borough Council, explained: “Hedge laying is the practice of partly cutting through each stem close to ground level, so the stem can be bent over without breaking and continues to grow.
“The stems are laid and staked into place where necessary to stabilise the hedge. This rejuvenates hedges and encourages new growth, ensuring a stock-proof boundary.”
The session was part of MEA Council’s National Tree Week celebrations.
