American War Memorial not given listed status

The American War Memorial at Cromore House in Portstewart will not become a listed building the Northern Ireland Environment Agency has confirmed.

On behalf of the Portstewart Branch of the Royal British Legion, Coleraine Council submitted a request that the memorial, sited within the grounds of Cromore House, be listed.

The War Memorial has listed status as part of the Cromore House listing. However, concern was expressed by the local branch of the Royal British Legion that in light of the pending sale and potential redevelopment of the house, the memorial might require separate listing.

The NIEA has inspected and evaluated the memorial and whilst they recognise its interest for the local branch of the RBL, they have decided when assessed against the Listing Criteria, it is not of sufficient architectural or historic interest to meet the statutory test as a listed building.
