Academy pupils visit Auschwitz

Banbridge Academy’s Religious Studies Department has just returned from an Educational Visit to Krakow and Auschwitz.

Thirty four pupils from Years 12, 13 and 14, accompanied by Mr Brown, Mrs Hassard, Miss McClelland and Mr Erskine travelled to Krakow on Thursday February 13 and returned on Sunday February 16.

Religious Studies at GCSE and A Level requires students to relate their academic study of Religion to other aspects of human experience and the visit enabled students to examine the experiences of Jews during the Holocaust and explore important themes such as discrimination, tolerance and respect.

The group were very privileged to meet with a Holocaust survivor, on the evening before their tour of the Auschwitz-Birkenau Concentration Camps.

Students also participated in a guided sightseeing tour of Krakow covering the Jewish Quarter, Schindler’s Factory and the Wartime Ghetto of Podgorze.

On a lighter note, the group also enjoyed a half day excursion to the Wieliczka Salt Mines; had the opportunity to spend quite a few Polish Zloty in the Main Square and at the Galeria Krakowska, and sampled the culinary delights of the Hard Rock Café in Krakow.
