The competition was part of the ‘Switch Off to Switch On’ campaign ran by Coleraine Borough Council, in partnership with the Policing and Community Safety Partnership.

Its aim is to encourage drivers to ‘switch off’ their mobile phone before driving to ‘switch on’ to the hazards of the road.

The judges included the Deputy Mayor of Coleraine, Councillor Yvonne Boyle, Sydney Henry, Road Education Officer for Police Service Northern Ireland and Helen McKeown, Ballymoney Road Safety Committee.

The winner was Thomas Hancock from Dalriada School, Ballymoney who scooped a Fire HD 6 tablet. The runner up was Rhianna Gardiner from Loreto College, Coleraine, who won an Argos voucher.

Pearl Mahon, Health & Well Being Officer at Coleraine Borough Council said: “I would like to thank the staff from our partnering organisations who supported the event and actively assisted in the event planning.’

“Thank you to both Loreto College and Dalriada School for participating and a special thanks to the students who entered who had clearly worked very hard in crafting their speeches.

“The level of competition this year was particularly high and I commend all who participated.”
