Like many local charities, the coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic has had a devastating impact on the Cancer Fund for Children’s funding.

Ninety per cent of their income is derived from fundraising, made possible by the generosity of the public. However, with many fundraising events cancelled and community fundraising at a virtual standstill Cancer Fund for Children has had to jump on a new track so they can keep their wheels spinning at a time when vulnerable families need their support more than ever.

With more and more people getting on their bikes now that lockdown measures are easing Cancer Fund for Children is launching a Charity Cycle Challenge which starts on Monday, July 6, and runs until Sunday, July 19.

Participants have the opportunity to sign up to two challenges ensuring that this event caters to cyclists of all levels.

The first challenge is a 300K Club Rider for intermediate and professional cyclists. The 300km distance is significant because this is the distance it takes to travel from Cancer Fund for Children’s therapeutic short break centre in Newcastle, Co. Down, to the site of their new Daisy Lodge short break facility in Cong, County Mayo.

The second option is a ‘5k a Day, for 5 Days’ challenge which is perfect for anyone looking to take on a more leisurely family-friendly cycle. With the ongoing Covid-19 situation, the charity advises participants to ensure they adhere to all current government guidelines whilst taking on their cycle.

Cancer Fund for Children’s CEO Phil Alexander, who lives in Doagh said: “During lockdown we have seen the demand for emotional support increase and there is a waiting list for therapeutic short breaks once our short break facility re-opens in July. More and more people have taken up cycling during lockdown and I would urge anyone who has got the cycling bug to sign up for our charity cycle challenge and help us ensure children don’t have to face cancer alone. This event is suitable for all levels of cyclists. There really is something for everyone.”

Registration for the 300K Club Rider Challenge Costs £20 and registration for the ‘5K for 5 Days’ cycle costs £10.

All participants will receive a fundraising information pack with everything they need to get started.

People can sign up at https://cancerfundforchildren.com/event/charity-cycle-challenge/or email [email protected] or call 028 9080 5599.
