THROUGH THE ARCHIVES: Remarkable Easter wedding is held in Cookstown

The wedding of Mr Philip Stanley Bass and Miss Marjorie Claire Raphael was had been held at Molesworth Street Presbyterian Church in Cookstown this week in 1930.

The groom was the son of Mr P Murray Bass and the late Mrs Bass of Belfast, while the bride was the only daughter of Mr Henry R Raphael, a solicitor, and Mrs Raphael of the Co Tyrone town.

Daffodils, ferns, evergreens and purple mimosa adorned the interior of the church, reported the News Letter, which gave “a very pleasing setting” for the ceremony.

The Rev John Entrican, BA, officiated at the wedding and the choir sang the hymn Love divine all love excelling and the Aaronic Blessing.

As the happy couple left the church the strains of the Wedding March were played.

A large wedding reception was held in the Commerical Hotel by the bride’s mother who “wore a Naples blue georgette dress touched with beige embroidery and hat to tone,” noted the News Letter.

The health of the bride and bridegroom was proposed by Mr R H Twigg and “drunk” with musical honours.

Meanwhile, Dr A M Elliott proposed a toast to the health of the bridesmaids which was responded to by Mr H C Raphael, the groomsman.

The young couple after the reception left for Dublin by motor car on their honeymoon, it was noted that on her departure the bride wore a dress of “blue crepe suede, grey squirrel coat and hat to tone”.

After Dublin the couple were to spend the remainder of their honeymoon in Switzerland.
