Over 100 attend Iveagh Area WI meeting

THE Spring meeting of Iveagh Area WI was held on Friday April 27 2012 in Loughbrickland Presbyterian Church Hall with 115 members attending.

Linda Dowds, Chairperson, opened the meeting by welcoming everyone present with a special welcome to the speaker for the evening, Alan Chambers.

As Mrs Ann Young had come to the end of her six years as Iveagh Executive member she was presented with a token of appreciation for her help and advice during this time. Mrs Roberta Mathers was welcomed as the new Executive member.

Reports were given by various sub committee members and institutes. The following awards were then presented: Ribbon for canework - Margaret Hewitt (Waringstown); Ribbon for boxes - Jennifer Taylor (Waringstown); Armoy trophy for sight reading - Kathleen Moore (Ballievey); Doreen Young Cup for soprano solo untrained - Pamela Spiers (Ballievey); Isobel Rainey Cup - Novice Choir (Iveagh Area choir); The quiz and bowls awards - Loughbrickland.

The speaker for the evening was Alan Champbers who gave the members a very entertaining talk and demonstration on a variety of flowering plant and shrubs from his garden. He showed his skill in filling hanging baskets and pots and answered members’ questions as he went along.

The competition for a hand decorated flower pot - the Loughbrickland Trophy - was judged by the speaker and was won by Waringstown.

A lovely supper was served by Loughbrickland, after which the members were enjoyably entertained by the Iveagh Area Choir
