McCallister says ‘Give it a Go!’

LOCAL MLA John McCallister is calling on everyone in the area to take part in the ‘Give it a Go!’ programme to help them get active, eat well and ultimately feel good.

A number of ground-breaking healthy living initiatives have been organised in the area for the whole month of March and everyone is encouraged to participate.

Mr McCallister said, “The ‘Give it a Go!’ programme is a fantastic opportunity for everyone to try out new activities which are both fun and good for you. I’m sure Assembly Members would be the first to admit that we could do with some help to encourage or continue our efforts to live more healthily, so this initiative is just the thing.

“All of the specially organised activities are free, so now is the time to ‘Give it a Go’!”

One such activity is a visit by the Ulster Cancer Foundation to the Rathfriland Farmers Market during the sheep sale on Tuesday 13 March from 5.30pm to 9pm.

John said, “They will be providing health checks specifically for men and I intend to be there myself. The old saying your health is your wealth cannot be underestimated, and research has shown that men, particularly in rural areas are not great when it comes to health checks and visiting their doctor. Therefore this is an excellent opportunity to make use of the health professionals while going about your normal farm work.”

Other activities include supermarket tours to help you understand food labels, kids’ hip-hop classes, walks, and sessions on how to grow your own salad bowl.

Also during March, you can swim at your local leisure centre for just £1 during public swim times.

The ‘Give it a Go!’ initiative has been organised through a partnership between Public Health Agency (PHA), Southern Group Environmental Health Committee, Southern Health and Social Care Trust, Armagh City & District Council, Banbridge District Council, Craigavon Borough Council, Newry & Mourne District Council.

Information about the activities is available through local newspapers, the ‘Give it a Go!’ brochure which is being distributed throughout each council area, and the website at www.giveitago.org.uk”
