Local home care company plans jam-packed fundraising month

The caring team at Home Instead Senior Care Down and Lisburn have planned ‘a September to remember’, with a month of fundraising activities which will raise money for a number of cancer charities to show support for their office owner, Lynn Elliot, who is undergoing treatment for breast cancer.

The fundraising ball started rolling when Julia Wade, Registered Manager at Home Instead, decided to brave the shave to show solidarity with Lynn.

Julia, whose hair has changed colour and style throughout her life, will be shaving it all off on Saturday October 3 and is hoping to raise donations for Cancer Focus Northern Ireland.

This then prompted the whole team to organise a number of different events throughout the month to raise money.

On September 5, staff members and caregivers completed a sponsored walk up the Stairway to Heaven in Cuilcagh, Fermanagh. Donations for this will go to the Marie Curie charity.

The home care company is also hosting their own Macmillan Coffee Morning with a twist. On September 16 home baked goods will be for sale, with a copy of the recipes, from their office premises in Saintfield. Due to social distancing, supporters will need to take their purchases home to have with a cuppa.

Henry, the team’s Networker is organising a charity raffle to coincide with Julia braving the shave. He’s hoping to get businesses and people in the local area to donate prizes to the raffle which will raise money for the Friends of the Cancer Centre, Belfast City Hospital. This event will be streamed live on Facebook and will be followed by a socially distanced evening party.

The team has adopted four teddy bears which they will use to help publicise their month of fundraising across social media and within their local community.

Julia commented: “We are a very close team here and we all wanted to show support for Lynn in any way that we could, and to show her she’s not alone during this time.

“The charities which provide support for those living with cancer are amazing, and we are happy to have the opportunity to raise money for them.”
