Last week Thompson Aero Seating was visited by the Health and Safety Executive (HSENI) following reports from a number of staff about concerns around working conditions amid confirmation that three employees had tested positive for the virus.

Speaking after it was confirmed that the HSENI had conducted an unannounced inspection, Portadown councillorJulie Flaherty urged the firm to put staff safety first.

“The news that three members of staff have tested positive for COVID-19 is worrying,” said the Ulster Unionist Party representative.

“I am in doubt that staff at Thompson Aero Seating will be frantic with worry, therefore the firm must double up on its procedures to stop this outbreak spreading further.

“I am aware that the Thompson Aero Seating had an unannounced visit from the HSENI and I await the expert’s report with interest.”

The councillor did, however, acknowledge that the firm is “literally fighting for survival”.

“Thompson Aero Seating is in an impossible position,” said Cllr Flaherty.

“They provide goods for Boeing and Airbus and both of these firms are still operating, therefore if they do not provide the goods they will be subject to manufacturing fines and the danger of these firms going elsewhere.

“Thompson Aero Seating are literally fighting for survival. That said, safety comes first and it is important that the firm adheres to all the advice from the Department of Health in respect of social distancing and other health and safety measures around the COVID-19 crisis.”

Confirming reports that an unannounced inspection had taken place a spokesperson for the HSENI said: “We can confirm that an unannounced inspection was carried out at Thompson Aero Space on Thursday, May 14, as a result of concerns raised by employees.”

Due to the size of the premises and ensuring staff who wanted to talk to inspectors had an opportunity to do so, the HSENI returned to the site on Friday, May 15.

The spokesperson added: “HSENI is unable to comment on the detail of the inspection due to restrictions under Article 30 of the Health and Safety at Work (NI) Order 1978.

“We can, however, confirm HSENI inspectors have met with both Management, Union representatives and employees during the inspection.”

A spokesperson for the company confirmed three employees had been diagnosed with COVID-19.

“Three employees of Thompson Aero Seating have recently tested positive for COVID-19 and are currently self-isolating,” said a spokesperson.

“Our thoughts are with them as wish them a full and speedy recovery.

“Thompson Aero Seating is following all government guidelines as well as those from the Health and Safety Executive.

“We continue to communicate closely with employees and are implementing measures to protect our people, including the provision of PPE and additional deep cleaning at our sites.”
