Armagh City, Banbridge and Craigavon Borough Council is to call for the removal of traffic wardens from town centres while the current Covid-19 restrictions are in place.

A proposal on the matter was brought forward by Alderman Stephen Moutray during the council’s monthly meeting in January.

The DUP representative explained he had been giving thought to the matter following a presentation from the Federation of Small Businesses at a committee meeting earlier in the month.

He called on the local authority to write to Department for Infrastructure (DfI) requesting the removal of traffic wardens from town centres while restrictions are in place.

“Members will know our towns have been decimated by these restrictions,” said Alderman Moutray.

“Town centres, with the the exception of banks, chemists and butchers, are empty.

“Despite this, we still have traffic attendants patrolling the high streets. I think we, as a council, should ask for red coats to be suspended while this lockdown is in place.

“I am proposing we write to the DfI asking for the suspension of traffic attendants for the duration of this lockdown.”

The proposal was seconded by Councillor Sam Nicholson.
