CORONAVIRUS: Graveyards close to public due to government guidelines

Many church and council-run cemeteries in Upper Bann are now closed to the public as government legislation to combat the Covid-19 virus comes into force.

Armagh, Banbridge and Craigavon Council said: “All Cemeteries in the Borough are closed (effective 30.03.20).

“Cemeteries will only be open for burial services.

“This decision was taken to comply with new legislation introduced by the Northern Ireland Assembly to curb the spread of Covid-19.

“We are aware that this is a very significant and stringent measure, which will be upsetting and hugely impactful on many in our community.

“As a Council, we hope that difficult actions like this will service to protect the people of our community during the days and weeks ahead.”

Graveyards run by the Catholic Church are also closed locally except for when funerals are taking place.
