Schoolboys try to con woman ‘for charity’

TWO schoolboys attempted to dupe a Willow Close resident into giving them money by telling her it was for a charity collection, police have said.

The boys said they were asking for donations for a school charity but when the householder refused and later checked with the police it was confirmed the boys were part of a scam.

Police are now re-emphasising to people the importance of checking the identity of unknown callers.

A spokeswoman said, “Police would advise householders to confirm the identity of anyone who calls to your home requesting money. House to house collectors will usually carry identity with them. If you are unsure of someone’s identity you can ask them to call at a later time and contact the charity or police to confirm that collections are ongoing in your local area. If in doubt, contact your local police on 0845 600 8000.”
