‘Connect’s Niamh Shiells said, “Some reports say that as many as 80% of children show behavioural problems from time to time and this can lead to more serious forms of challenging behaviour in later life.

“All parents want to provide the best parenting for their children and be equipped with strategies and tips to promote positive behaviour. Positive behaviour is always of concern to parents, hence the recent trend for programmes like Super Nanny and Nanny 911.

“Children who have additional needs can experience frustration and isolation due to the difficulties their disability causes in communication, taking part in play and social activities.

“Sometimes the only means of expressing this frustration is through their behaviour and this can be difficult for others to understand or manage.”

Niamh’s co-founder at ‘Connect’, Judith Clarke, added, “We are delighted that Philip Oldham, an expert in behaviour analysis, will be coming to our meeting to give an informal talk on ‘Positive Approaches to Challenging Behaviour’.

“Philip will also be happy to discuss individual situations and experiences. Philip has been teaching pupils with Severe Learning difficulties for the past 10 years. Anyone with concerns about their child’s behaviour, or who would like to know more about ‘Connect’ will be made very welcome.”

“Our ‘Connect’ meetings have been well attended and the feedback from parents has been excellent. Parents tell us that they are glad to get to meet other mums with similar experiences of looking after a child with additional needs and share tips and support,”
