Council moves toreassure town traders

BANBRIDGE District Council has moved to reassure town traders in the wake of the approval for developers to build a Tesco store at Bridgewater Park.

They said they are committed to supporting the development of a strong economy driven by town centre retail.

“Council Chairman Councillor Jim McElroy said, “While we welcome the major investment, job creation and infrastructural improvements that this new development will bring to the district, we understand the concerns of the local traders and their fears for the future viability of their business.

“However, the council is fully committed to making sure that the new Tesco store at Bridgewater Park does not take shoppers and visitors away from the town centre. We will do all we can to make sure local businesses are promoted in conjunction with the new development and we will be working closely with local traders to exploit the benefits that increased footfall to the area will bring.”

The council said it will continue to push the developers to ensure they provide the bus station, multi-storey car park and environmental projects pomised.
