‘Get into Retail’ is a training and mentoring scheme that gives young people aged 16-30, not currently in full time employment, education or training, the skills, experience and confidence they need to find a job. During the programme participants complete on the job training in a Tesco store and receive regular feedback and guidance from a dedicated buddy.

There are two opportunities to get involved in the Get into Retail programme, the first starts with an online taster day on October 13 and then the programme runs from October 19 to November 6.

The second taster day is November 3 with the three-week programme running from November 9-27.

Placements are available in stores across Northern Ireland.

Hassan Alkhawam, aged 23, moved to the province from Syria nearly three years ago. He was looking for work when a friend told him about The Prince’s Trust Get into Retail programme with Tesco. After completing the programme he was offered a job in a Northern Ireland store and has been working there for six months.

He said: “I found the programme really interesting; I think it is a great opportunity. Everyone was amazing and I was delighted to be offered a job in Tesco at the end of it. I’ve been working there for six months now, right through the Covid 19 pandemic. The stores have been busy, but it feels good to be helping during this difficult time.

“It is great to be earning money and living independently, I’ve made lots of new friends and I have also recently been accepted to study Software Engineering at Queens. I’m so proud to work for Tesco and would recommend the Get into Retail course to anyone”

* The Prince’s Trust helps young people to develop the confidence and skills they need to realise their ambitions, so that they can live, learn and earn. Founded by The Prince of Wales in 1976, the charity supports 11 to 30 year-olds who are unemployed, struggling at school and at risk of exclusion. The programmes offered by the charity give vulnerable young people the practical and financial support needed to stabilise their lives, helping develop self-esteem and skills for work. Three in four young people supported by The Trust move into work, education or training.
