Record comedy bid

LURGAN comedian Sean Hegarty is attempting to break a comedy world record.

At this year’s Edinburgh Fringe Festival Sean will try to tell the most jokes in a hour.

You’ll be forgiven if you think you’re experiencing deja vu. Sean appeared in the ‘MAIL’ two years ago to talk about his plans to do the same thing.

Sadly, that attempt didn’t get off the ground, but this time Sean is determined to make it happen.

Sean told the ‘MAIL’: “I just didn’t think I was experienced enough to try it then. If anything had come of it I knew I wouldn’t be able to follow through.

“It was something that was always there. It was an idea that I had to attempt sometime in my career.

“Now everything is in full swing. I’m writing constantly and preparing to break the record.”

Sean played 50 stand up shows at last year’s Edinburgh Fringe Festival and says those shows have spurred him on to go for bigger and better things.

“It was one of my best experiences,” said Sean. “I did a year’s worth of gigs in a month.”

He continued: “No two gigs I do are the same. Once I start into the ‘friend’ jokes or ‘wife’ jokes I’ll start using them as they come into my head. I don’t stick to the same routines again and again.”

The world record for most jokes told in an hour stands at 549. Sean hopes to go into the show armed with 600 jokes which he’ll need to rattle out at a rate of one every nine seconds. Only the jokes that get a laugh will count.

Sean said: “The jokes will need to be short and sharp. For example, I tried to write a joke about unemployment the other day but it didn’t work.

Sean has welcomed the help of ‘MAIL’ readers to help him break the record.

He’s encouraging anyone with topics, words, phrases or sayings that could act as inspiration for him to follow him on Facebook or Twitter and drop him a line.
