Lurgan bands miss out on music prize

Trucker Diablo had been nominated for the award for their sophomore album Songs Of Iron while The Bonnevilles were also strong contenders thanks to second coming entitled Folk Art & The Death Of Electic Jesus.

They were up against stiff competition in the shape of Two Doors Cinema Club, A Plastic Rose, And So I Watch You From Afar, Anthony Toner, Le Carousel, Axis Of, Fighting With Wire, Girls Name, Foy Vance, Jetplane Landing, Space Dimension Controller and Tired Pony.

Homegrown garage punk/blues duo The Bonnevilles played at an event in the Mandela Hall on Tuesday night, backed by the Oh Yeah Music Centre, to celebrate the NI Music Prize which was won by Bangor singer-songwriter Foy Vance for his album Joy Of Nothing.

Now in its fourth year, Belfast Music Week has become a focal point for the music scene in Northern Ireland and the NI Music Prize was a highlight of this year’s festivities.

Elsewhere during Belfast Music Week, local band More Than Conquerors will be playing a free showcase event in the Limelight 1 tonight (Thursday, November 14).

The 12 bands taking part are Arborist, David C Clements, Girls Names, Go Wolf, The Jepettos, Little Bear, LaFaro, More Than Conquerors, Ryan Vail, Sea Pinks, Seven Summits and The Wonder Villains.

Doors are at 7pm and the first act is on at 8pm.

Tomorrow night (Friday, November 15) Lurgan metallers Sinocence feature in an extra loud gig in the Ulster Hall organised by The Distortion Project.

DP13 – Rock the Hall is a landmark concert to celebrate The Distortion Project’s 13th anniversary, showcasing the best in Northern Irish metal.

Bands include Stormzone, Sinocence, Triggerman, Skypilot, Zombified and Rabid Bitch of the North, with a special guest to be announced.

The event is for over 16s only and entry is £10.
