The Killers rock Phoenix Park

Las Vegas rockers The Killers made a welcome return to Dublin last weekend when they played one of a trio outdoor gigs at Phoenix Park.

The park welcomed Justin Timberlake, The Killers and Mumford & Sons within a few days of each other, but with glorious sunshine, the ground held up well and concert goers revelled in the fine weather, with no hint of last year’s crowd trouble which plagued the Swedish House Mafia show.

Ably supported by Haim, Two Door Cinema Club and Frank Ocean, Brandon Flowers and co took to the stage shortly after 9pm and fans certainly weren’t disappointed.

With a back catalogue which boasts hits such as When You Were Young, All These Things That I’ve Done and Mr Brightside, as well as recently hits Runaways and Miss Atomic Bomb, the set had the atmosphere in the park rising along with the temperature.

Kicking off with one of their earliest hits Somebody Told Me, the band went onto perform tracks such as Spaceman, The Way It Was, Smile Like You Mean It, a beautiful piano-led version of Human, Bling (Confessions of a King), Shadowplay and Miss Atomic Bomb.

Launching into the full version of Human, the crowd were on their feet for one of the band’s most popular hits.

One of the surprises of the night was a Killers version of I Think We’re Alone Now, with Flowers’ telling the crowd that ‘Girls Aloud stole it from Tiffany, Tiffany stole it from Tommy James and the Shondells, and tonight we’re taking it back.’ And they certainly did, with fans dancing and singing along.

The night continued with For Reasons Unknown and then the Killers almost went country as Brandon Flowers encouraged the crowd to dance along - with no encouragement needed amid a holiday spirit in the park - to From Here On Out.

The beautiful, A Dustland Fairytale, was up next, followed by a cover of U2’s Pride (In The Name of Love), much to the delight of the Irish crowd.

As the night came toward an end, the hits kept on rolling and the atmosphere was cranked up a few notches as The Killers rocked the park with hits such as Read My Mind, Runaways and the crowd favourite All These Things That I’ve Done. The Killers definitely have soul.

With fireworks exploding on the summer’s evening and laser displays around the park, The Killers didn’t hold back.

Following a brief break, the band were back to complete a fantastic night with Jenny Was A Friend of Mine, When You Were Young and the classic hit Mr Brightside, which prompted a sing along second to none, and left the crowd wanting more.

Everyone we spoke to after the gig spoke of how much they loved the show, and how The Killers rocked the place. And they certainly did. One of the best live acts around, The Killers never fail to impress, and fans will be hoping it isn’t long before they are back again.
