Great Irish journeys on TV

Broadcaster and journalist Martha Kearney visits some of the iconic sights of the North Coast in the second episode of Great Irish Journeys on BBC One Northern Ireland on Monday, March 23 at 7.30pm.

In a series which takes the viewer on a comprehensive walk of the island, the four programmes unlock the story of Ireland’s hidden landscapes.

Kearney follows in the footsteps of 19th century Irish artist and geologist, exploring the places Du Noyer visited and captured so wonderfully in sketch and paint.

The programmes also reveal the intrinsic relationship between the people and the land

In episode two, Irish-born Kearney travels north and sees how the landscape has had a profound bearing on its history, taking in the extraordinary beauty of Dunluce Castle and onwards to Mussenden Temple, Castlerock.

Says Martha: “It has been fascinating to see the land of my birth through the eyes of Du Noyer, whose restless curiosity led him to explore Ireland’s landscape, history, culture and people.

“Whether it was clambering over castles or sinking up to my thighs in a bog, I have been on an extraordinary journey round Ireland’s most stunning scenery with an inspiring 19th century artist as my guide.”
