West Down Wheelers begin season with Paul in top form

It has been an excellent start to the season for the riders of West Down Wheelers.

In the first TT on Rathfriland Road, Paul Wilkinson recorded a super 22 minute ride to win outright.

There was a few Wheelers that caught the eye besides Paul’s 22. Mark’s 24, Allister’s 25, John’s 24, Clydie’s 24 and Will’s 25 were all impressive finishes.

Results were even better in the next TT on the Castlewellan Road. Riders who have shot up the leader board were Karl’s 25 on his road bike, Matt’s 25 on his road bike and Clive’s 25. That made it nine riders with very respectable times and Darren Lynass, Paul McManus and Pete Savage are still to come in.

It’s surely going to be some battle this year in the club.

There are even more riders who could well improve in the coming weeks when the nights are warmer and not as windy such as Eddy Cantly, Dee Cantly and Andy Hodgen.

To date, there have been eight riders taking part in the open racing on a Saturday and doing very well. Paul, Darren, Matt, Andy, Clive, John Clyde, Allister and John Kergahan, making his first appearance.

Matt, Clive, And Allister rode well in the John Beggs Memorial race and were part of approximately 16 finishers out of 70 starters.

Paul rode well in the Tour of the Mournes. It’s a very tough race with alot of riders pulling out.

The Wheelers also have two riders out injured at the minute, Darren due to a bad accident and Allister due to an operation. They’re both aiming to be back in action for their big race at the Katesbridge GP on 24 May.
