WARRENPOINT DISH OUT A PIERCE PURCELL DEFEAT
THERE was a large crowd at Tandragee Golf club last Sunday afternoon for the Pierce Purcell match between Banbridge and Warrenpoint.
These two teams met in the Ulster final last season and Warrenpoint were victorious on that occasion by the narrowest of margins.
Dominic Quinn was once again the captain of the local team and he was confident that he had the squad who would "do the business". But he also knew that opponents don't come any more competitive than Warrenpoint.
Mark Carson and Fergie Cosgrove were first away and they lost 5 and 4 against Seamus Sands and Damian Flanagan. So the first point went to the 'Point.
And so too did the second one. Paul Mc Donald and Andrew Kennedy lost by two holes against Vivian O'Loughlin and Raymond Jackson.
Things took a turn for the better in game three. Neil Diamond and Joe Glass beat Andrew Ferguson and Paul Devlin 3 and 2.
The match score was level at 2-2 after game number four. Hugh Dunne and
Dr. William Mc Candless beat Seamus Colgan and Michael Fitzpatrick by one hole up.
Everything depended on the fifth and final game.
Joe O'Neill and Richard Winters battled bravely against Noel Devine and Seamus Pentony but they lost by 2 and 1.
Warrenpoint had won by three games to two.
There was very little between these two great rivals but, on this occasion, Warrenpoint just had the edge. It's sad that there had to be a loser but that's the game of golf.
Once again, Dominic Quinn was meticulous in his preparation for the matches and his players all gave of their best. We know how much Dominic would like to win the Pierce Purcell Shield but he will have to wait for another year.
