ON Saturday Rathfriland U9s played Windmill in a high scoring and entertaining game of football.
Rathfriland took an early lead after a great run from Shane Haughey who set up Conor McElroy, who hit a first time shot into the Windmill net.
Christopher McConville then went on a great run, dancing past three Windmill players before sending his shot just wide of the goal.
Windmill fought back and scored a couple of goals before the end of the first period.
In the second period Rathfriland drew level after great work from Adam Trimble and Shane Haughey down the right flank, Adam produced a great cross for Eoghan Travers to score his first of the game.
Windmill dug deep and took the lead to make it 4-2, but Rathfriland didn’t let their heads go down and produced a fantastic comeback.
Shane Haughey produced a real captain’s performance and took control of the Rathfriland midfield and scored their third goal. Alex McKee then showed his class with a great run and shot to score Rathfriland’s fifth.
Rathfriland started to dominate the play with Reuben Toal taking control of the defence and linking up well with Adam Trimble who scored Rathfriland’s sixth goal.
Aaron Baxter deputised in the Rathfriland’s goal this week and denied Windmill’s forward line on a number of occasions. Aaron has proved this season that, not only is he great outfield but when asked to play in goals he can step up to the mark.
Shane Haughey continued his rich goal scoring form by getting a total of four goals for the game, this was another fine display from young Shane.
The man of the match and grabbing his first hat-trick for Rathfriland was Eoghan Travers who has proved that he really has an eye for goal.
This was another great display from the Rathfriland U9s who continue to play a great passing style of football.
