RATHFRILAND U10 COLTS 4-0 ANNALONG U10 COLTS: HAVING slipped to a 2-0 defeat to Annalong Rovers in their first game of the day the Colts set out determined to make amends in game two.
The locals went on the attack from the first whistle with the midfield of Caolan Teer, Mark Bronte and Allyssa Waddell dominating possession. The possession almost paid off when Ben Johnston cut in from the right wing and fired a wicked left footed shot that pinged off the right hand post and out to safety.
Within minutes Johnston did exactly the same again hitting the same bit off woodwork. It looked like luck was not going to be on their side when Peter Newell crashed a shot off the underside of the seasider’s crossbar and they were denied a penalty.
Their fortune turned before half-time when Johnston capitalised on some excellent play by Rhys McKee to get the opener and Peter Newell fired in a second from the edge of the box.
Rathfriland sealed the win early in the second half when Teer finished neatly after a trademark mazy dribble through the stretched Annalong defence and Johnston got his second of the game with strong challenge and low shot that gave the Annalong keeper no chance.
RATHFRILAND U10 COLTS 0 MIDWAY UNITED 1: In the final game of their league campaign the Colts faced up to a strong Midway team who had earlier clinched the League title. The locals played brilliantly to give the Newry lads a real fright and were very unlucky not to come away with at least a draw.
Rathfriland could have taken the lead early on when Allyssa Waddell had two shots go narrowly wide and Will Cromie had a long range effort just drift past the left hand post. Midway took the lead just before the break when Rathfriland failed to clear a long ball and the striker fired passed the outstretched Darren Sloan in goal. Rathfriland battled hard in the second half with Caolan Teer creating two or three openings that he could not convert. The defensive line Ethan Niblock, Will Cromie, Kirk Chambers and man of the match Leon Shimmons held out comfortably to ensure the Colts finished off with a very creditable result.
