Tough day in Lisburn for depleted thirds team

Bann 3rds travelled to Friends School Lisburn to take on South Antrim 3rds at their new superb base hoping to build on last week’s home win over South’s second string.

The locals were hit by a string of unfortunate late cry-offs and it was a very inexperienced side that lined up despite the inclusion of seasoned campaigners Joe McKnight, Roger Martin, and Neil Madeley.

They immediately took the game to the home side and were unfortunate not to take the lead after some good build up play involving captain Matthews and the lively Mike Young.

They took the lead after 10 minutes when a superb counter attack released Matthews and he calmly finished from mid-circle.

Bann were dealt a hammer blow minutes later when McKnight had to leave the pitch with the recurrence of an old hamstring injury.

This changed the flow of the game as Bann had to carry on with 10 men but to their credit they defended like their lives depended on it right up to a minute before half time when South equalised.

After the interval Bann bravely soldiered on with the entire team working hard to stay in the game and unbelievably took the lead again after 40 minutes when Matthews deftly touched in a Doyle superb reverse stick cross.

South then literally threw the kitchen sink at Bann and were rewarded with an equaliser from another rebounded short corner with the locals again not getting the run of the ball. Fve minutes they took the lead adding a killer fourth just before the hour mark.

To their credit Bann kept plugging away but to no avail.
