Swifts swept aside by Point

RATHFRILAND made the short journey over the mountains on Saturday past to take on Warrenpoint Town Reserves. in a league fixture.

In the return fixture at Iveagh Park the Swifts comfortably defeated Warrenpoint but this was a very different Warrenpoint to the one defeated at Iveagh Park.

On a pitch that was on the verge of being unplayable the game began with the ‘Point bossing the early exchanges and pinning the swifts back in their own half.

The home side opened the scoring ten minutes in as the superb number 11 bamboozled the Swifts centre halves on the edge of the box working space for a shot which he duely slotted home giving Curran no chance.

Number two soon followed when the swifts inexplicably backed off the Warrenpoint full back and he took this invitation to shoot and from all of 30 yards unleashed a thunderous drive into the bottom corner.

The half ended with Warrenpoint in control and the swifts glad to get a chance to regroup.

The Second half began with Gilmore in a more advanced role in front of Megaw and this initially paid dividends as the swifts took control in the opening 10 minutes of the half.

Neat interchanging play from a Rathfriland throw in between Bell Gilmore Robb and Hillen allowed Megaw to arrive unmarked on the edge of the box but he could only manage a tame shot and the chance passed.

Again from a Swifts throw down the left a run from Gilmore dragged his marker away leaving space for Megaw to take a pass from Johnston and tee himself up for a shot but the point keeper was equal to it.

Disaster struck however when the Point hit the Swifts on the counter and the number 11 again finished with aplomb to give the home side a three goal cushion.

The Swifts continued to press and play an open end to end game. Unfortunately Warrenpoint were always sharp on the break and took two further chances to flatter themselves a little with a 5-1 scoreline.

Team: Curran, J. Jackson, C. Jackson, K. Megaw, Bell, Johnston, Gilmore, A. Megaw (capt.), Robb, Hillen, Toal, Subs; Tumelty, Ward.
