Sub par finish puts Harry into top position
THERE was a large entry for the Stableford competition on Saturday July 17.
The scoring was better than average and it resulted in a calculated standard scratch of nett 66 or 39 stableford points.
Ten players equalled the CSS and 16 managed to beat it.
The 10 who finished with 39 points were Dennis Lockhart (13), Joe O’Neill (10), Tony Ewbanks (11), Albert Morrison (19), Jeffrey Brown (12), Seamus McGrath (14), Keith Steenson (8), Eamon McAnarney (12), Eamon Galloway (18) and Ronnie Haliday (10).
Forty points or better is the target most Saturdays in a stableford competition. It’s a fair achievement and any golfer who manages it should be well pleased.
Barry Tumilty (9), Robert Canning (20), Mel Hylands (11) and Scott McCandless (8) all reached the magic number of 40 points.
No less than eight players finished with 41 points and, using countback, they were placed in the following order: Tom Fee (10), Mervyn Campbell (13), Neil Hinds (17), Lee Willdridge (16), Barry Casey (13), Steven Wilton (13), Peter Hillen (10) and Neil Madeley (5).
Two of the more senior members of the group came away smiling.
Peter Hillen won the prize for the best senior and Tom Fee slipped quietly into fourth place.
That just leaves four outstanding performances.
Firstly, there was Paul McAleavey (5) with 42 points. Paul, still one of the longest hitters in the club, won the best gross prize with a one under par 68. He becomes the 18th different winner of the gross prize this year.
Kevin Smyth (14 now 12) was third with 44 points. A short time ago, Kevin was in the running for a place on the Junior Cowdy team. He was an 18 handicapper then and, would you believe it, he is now playing off 12. Is it possible to go from an 18 handicap to single figures in one season? I wouldn’t bet against Kevin achieving just that.
Adrian Barry (20 now 18) was the runner-up with 45 points. This is another wonderful golfing story.
Adrian is a key player on the Junior Cowdy team, he has reached the semi-final of the Haughton Smyth Cup beating Stuart Hunter and Jonathan Ward along the way and he was a member of the team, which won the Richard Fitzpatrick Golf Classic. I don’t think Adrian can believe all that has happened.
And the winner of the competition was Harry Sands (16 now 15). Harry also had 45 points and he beat Adrian on countback.
Harry plays early in the morning in very good company. His playing partners are Nigel Bryson, Morris Phillips and Cameron Morton and they really inspire him.
That’s the way it should be.
Harry went round in 76 gross, only seven over par. His finish was superb and it proved decisive. The last four holes are the ruination of many cards but Harry played them 3, 3, 4, 3, one under par. Great stuff!
