Senior Cowdy team impress against Tandragee

THE Banbridge Senior Cowdy Cup team, captained by Kieran Magennis, are in a strong position to reach the semi-final of this year's competition.

They played the home leg of their quarterfinal against Tandragee last Wednesday evening. Despite the threat of heavy rain and impending thunderstorms, Kieran’s team finished clear winners, 20.5 points to 10.5.

That means that they will travel to Tandragee needing eleven points for victory.

That may sound an easy target, but remember, it’s not too long ago that the Senior Cowdy team went to Kilkeel needing only three points and did not get them. So, it is not over just yet.

The details of the first leg are as follows: Kieran Magennis (5) led from the front and he beat Paul Ross (5) 1 up and collected three points.

Jonathan Ward (3) was in tip-top form and he beat Chris McGladdery (3) 2and 1. Jonathan got three points.

Paul Magennis (4) never put a foot wrong as he coasted to a 6 and 5 win over Neil Cooke (4) and he took all four points.

Rory Madeley (5) was too experienced for young Stephan Greenberg (5) to handle. Rory won 4 and 3 and he too got the maximum four points.

Trevor Woods (5) was obviously distracted by the Fred Daly match, which was taking place at the same time. He lost his focus and lost his match against Jack McClean (5) by 2 and 1. Trevor still picked up a valuable half point.

Neil Madeley (5) slipped up against Clarke McAllister (5) and he was disappointed to lose 2 down. Neil had to be content with one point.

Jonathan Burns (5), the paragon of match players, beat Craig Black (5) 4 and 3 and picked up the maximum four points.

It was left to Kenny Stevenson (3), the doyen of the team, to bring up the rear. He was playing James Hewitt (3) and, when his putt at the last looked into the hole but did not fall, Kenny had to settle for a half and two points.

Twenty and a half points is a very good total and Kieran Magennis should be pleased. His team look more than capable of finishing the job at Tandragee.

Let’s hope so!
