Kenny’s senior team well placed in Cowdy Cup

BANBRIDGE were drawn against Dungannon in the quarter final of the Senior Cowdy Cup.

The first leg was played at Dungannon last Sunday. The Banbridge team captain, Kenny Stevenson, was looking for his team to collect somewhere around 15 points out of the 32 on offer. His team did him proud.

Colin Wilton, out first, beat Tim Jardine 2 and 1 and he picked up all four points.

Kenny Stevenson was forced into playing himself at number two. He halved his match with Joe Timlin and got two points.

Stuart Hunter lost a tight match against Conor McCaughey by 2 and 1 and Stuart got one point.

Luke Woods was beaten 4 and 3 by Mark Currie but he managed to pick up a valuable half point.

Jonathan Burns halved his game against Jack McElroy and that was another two points for Banbridge.

At this stage, Dungannon held a one-point lead, 10.5 – 9.5. That was excellent, as far as Banbridge were concerned.

But Dungannon picked up seven and a half points from the next eight.

Kieran Magennis was a little off form and he lost 3 and 2 against Connor McKinney and only got half a point.

Jonathan Shannon was unlucky to draw a blank against Ryan Starney. He lost by

2 and 1 and got no points.

Dungannon now led by 18 points to 10 with one game to come in. Kenny and the Banbridge contingent were worried. But they didn’t need to worry as Neil Clydesdale played brilliant golf to beat Brian Devlin 2 and 1 and he collected all four points. Neil was the hero of the day.

So the score at the halfway stage is Dungannon 18, Banbridge 14. It’s all to play for in the second leg at Banbridge some day next week. Watch the board for details and try and come out to support your team. It could be an exciting finish but Banbridge must be favourites.
