Dromore’s young guns reach quarter finals

AS Ireland put Wales to the sword in the Six Nations in Cardiff, Dromore’s young guns made their way into the quarter finals of the coveted Towns Cup competition.
They played hosts to Limavady on a sticky pitch at Barban Hill.
Coach Bekker used the cup tie to shuffle the backs slightly and Brian McClearn made his debut on the wing.
Dromore kicked off against the wind and made progress early, a catch and drive by the impressive Dromore pack led led to a try by Andrew Black which Steenson converted. 7-0 to Dromore.
Limavady’s defence was impressive as Dromore attacked at will, the backs coming close to increasing the lead through Cobb, Steenson and Kinghan but it was the pack again who drove over from another lineout, this time Harshaw got the try to increase the lead to 12- 0.
Dromore continued to attack but were unable to finish off some promising moves and Limavady began to get some possession and this led to their big centre scoring on the stroke of half time to reduce the deficit to 12-5.
Dromore increased their lead shortly after the break with a well taken penalty by Steenson and the home side supporters started to relax thinking a comfortable win was on the cards.
Limavady thought different and attacked the Dromore side at every opportunity, but the defence held firm until a kick and chase from the Limavady winger produced a try, the scoreboard entering the final quarter read 15-12 to the home side and that is how it ended with Limavady failing to threaten the Dromore line again.
Coach Bekker was relieved to progress in the cup. “We are happy to go into the hat in the next round, and hopefully we will get another home draw, but we need to work hard in the coming weeks to prepare ourselves for the business end of the season,” he said.
“We have now won our last four matches and we travel to Coleraine next Saturday for an important league fixture. We will be working towards continuing our run of good form next week”
