Bann stay in Sam Rutherford Cup

PJ Johnston is the captain of the Banbridge Sam Rutherford Cup team and he certainly believes in living dangerously.

His team have reached the last eight after two victories, which Harry Houdini would have been proud of.

They beat Spa in round one when they were given no chance after a way below par performance at home.

In the second round, they met County Armagh Golf Club, the beaten finalists for the last two years.

Once again, Banbridge performed very mediocre at home, finishing only 3 holes up.

As they headed off to Armagh for the second leg, the experts gave them little or no chance. How wrong they were!

Eamon McAnarney and Connor Mulholland went out first and they played brilliantly to win by one hole up.

Ian Young and Scott Nelson were equally impressive in the second game and they also won by one hole up.

John McDowell and Chris McAvoy kept their game very tight and they finished up losing by only one hole down.

With one game to come in, Banbridge were four holes up overall. But the final result was far from decided.

Ronnie Halliday and Garreth Moody were going along nicely, all-square after 14 holes. Then, shock, horror, they lost the 15th, 16th and 17th holes to be, all of a sudden, three down with one to play.

If they lost the 18th, it would be all level and there would be a sudden death play-off.

It was a very nervous moment for Ronnie and Garreth but they were up for the task. They won the last hole and Banbridge had won the match by a mere two holes.

What a finish!

P.J. is all excited, as in the quarterfinal, Banbridge will play Mourne Golf Club and that will mean a game over the world-renowned Royal County Down links.

It couldn’t get any better.
