Banbridge into last eight of fourball

HERE is a result that should put a smile on your face.

The Banbridge Ulster Fourball team have reached the quarter-final of this very prestigious competition.

The captain is Merton McDowell and he has guided his team to victory over Fintona, Moyola Park, Cushendall and now Mannan Castle.

They went to Mannan Castle last Sunday for the second leg of their quarterfinal. They had a four points lead after a tremendous display of golf at home.

All that was required was one win from the five games. Now, around Mannan Castle, that was no foregone conclusion.

But up stepped Billy Clarke and John Poots who were determined to settle the issue in double quick time. They were three down early on in their game but rallied to win by 4 and 2. That was it all over and everyone could retire to watch the closing stages of the Open.

The other games were all very close and we’ll never know how they would have finished.

The other members of the team were Will Dickson and Gerry Blevins, Darren Barker and Philip Strong, Dominic Quinn and James Bryson, Robert Clydesdale and Robert Haire.

Their quarter-final opponents will be either Omagh or Shandon Park.

It’s all getting very exciting. Just imagine, Banbridge could very well win the Ulster Fourball. Wouldn’t that be something!
