Myles retires from glittering Ireland career

Myles is the club’s most capped player for Ireland and has called time on his career at international and inter association level.

Myles first came to the attention of many bowlers across Ireland in 1990, when after helping Dunbarton A team win the Division Two Senior League Championship, he was named IBA Young Player of the Year.

By 1992, he gained the first of his many Ireland caps when he was selected for the first time as a Junior International. That same year, he skipped a rink of Jim McConville, Sammy Kerr and his father Tom to the NIPGL & Irish Fours titles, defeating Richard McDermott of Coleraine 23-21 in the final.

His first senior international cap came in 1993 and Myles was once again back in the green shirt in 1997. He would continue to represent his country at the highest level until 2008. Myles was part of successful Ireland teams winning the British Isles Championships in 1999, their first title in 18 years, and back to back titles in 2005 and 2006.

His second Irish title arrived in 1996 when he won the Under 25 Singles Championship, defeating Jeremy Henry of Portrush 21-17.

In 2002, the coveted IBA Senior Singles title arrived when Myles beat Lisnagarvey’s Noel Graham 21-19.

Further fours titles arrived in 2010 and 2014, when he skipped his rink of Michael Higgins, Andy Hughes and DJ Wilson to victories.

Myles craved success with Dunbarton and in 2002, the IBA Senior Cup was added to his medal haul.

But the hunt for that elusive Senior League medal continued until 2006, when the championship finally made its way to Gilford and further league success followed every season until 2011.

But 2009 was to be a standout year for Greenfield, when individually he returned from South Africa and the Atlantic Rim Championships with a bronze medal in the Triples.

The success continued that summer and the greatest year in Dunbarton’s history was complete when Myles and his colleagues completed an amazing treble of NIPGL League, Cup and IBA Senior Cup, a feat only achieved by a handful of clubs.

Unbelievably last season, they were only one game away from completing this feat for a second time, when they won the NIPGL and IBA Senior Cups and finished runners-up in Senior Division One.

Myles was a key part of those successes and his hunger is still very much there for more titles with his beloved Dunbarton.
