It was another busy week for the West Down Wheelers as the season hit the half-way stage.

Last Tuesday night, the club had their 25 mile TT on the Castlewellan Road for the Steven Savage Memorial Shield.

There was no surprise that Paul Wilkinson’s 58 was the fastest time of the 15 riders. It was a superb effort with only Rod Stewart and Davy McKnight the only other two to get under the hour.

Matt McKinstry’s 61 was a PB for him and shows he’s still improving with every race. It was a great night too for Jonny Maxwell and Dave Frizzel, who roder their first 25 in their first year of racing.

Jonny’s 68 on an ordinary road bike and Dave’s 64 was not bad at all. What’s just as pleasing for the club is that they, like Allister, are amongst the most loyal riders, hardly ever missing a race.

The Wheelers are delighted that there is a fantastic atmosphere around and everyone is striving to train harder to do the club proud.

Causeway Coast Triathlon

West Down Wheelers’ Paul McManus and Pete Savage both had super results in the recent Causeway Coast Triathlon.

Paul just gets better and better with every Triathlon he enters and Pete a season campaigner, he epitomises all about the way you should train no matter what sport it is.

Results: Pete fifth overall and Paul 13th overall.

lurgan criteriam

On Friday night, Matt and Andy headed to Lurgan to take part in a Criteriam and both rode really well with Matt sixth overall and Andy finishing well in their race.

Warrenpoint Swim Around The Rock Competition.

Paul McManus and Pete Savage headed up to Warrenpoint at the weekend to compete in the Around The Rock Competition, both of them not afraid of giving it their all and doing really well.

Irish National Championship at Omagh

Last weekend, West Down Wheelers Darren Lynas headed up to Omagh to compete in the Irish National Championship. Darren was riding against the best riders in the country and reckoned it was his best race of the year.

McKinley Three Day Stage Race

Paul Wilkinson and Darren Lynas will once again take part in the McKinley Three day stage race which will held soon. Get out and cheer them on also if you think you can help in any way then let the Wheelers know. Paul will be hoping to go one better than his fantastic fourth placing overall last year.

upcoming races

This week’s race is another round of the Aussie / Pursuit series. This is one of the club’s better Aussie Pursuits but also possibly the toughest.

Now, though, the Wheelers know they have the riders in place at the club who will take on any course.

Starting on the Rathfriland Road via Annaclone, Rathfriland Hill, Ballyroney, Moneyslane, Katesbridge, Cattlehill, Garvaghy Post Office and finishing at the Quarry.

Next week, the club have a Road Race at Katesbridge - 3 laps of the West Down GP circuit.

Then all riders please note that a 10 TT, which was to be held on the Castlewellan Road on Tuesday 14th July will now be held on Thursday 16th.
