The rain and thunderstorms did nothing to deter shooters who still made for an entertaining night of shooting at the latest 20-bird DTL held at Rathfriland, on Thursday July 25.
Shooters began to arrive just as the rain started to clear, and over the night a total of nine lines were shot.
That is a decent return, especially after a weekend which was dominated by international competition.
The night also saw a visit from Mick McConville, who was in the country for the recent Home International and British Open competition. Mick always makes a point to visit the club during his visits – a welcome man!
The final on the night was made up of five shooters; Geoff Dale was first to hit the 20/60, as he normally is during the summer shooting at Rathfriland.
He was closely followed by a trio of veteran shooters; JP Doran, William Robinson and Noel Carson all staking their claim for the top prize.
They were soon to be joined by junior shooter Damien Corvan, aiming for an upset. Rathfriland’s Enoch McCauley completed the line-up.
The shoot-off made for tense viewing, but it was the veteran shooters who set the standard.
Noel Carson and JP Doran were showing great form, and hit further 20/60 scores to force a head-to-head.
From the first final it was Geoff Dale and Enoch McCauley who came closest, both hitting 20/59.
The head-to-head between Doran and Carson was forced through to single-barrel competition, in what was a fantastic finale.
In the end it was JP Doran who held his nerve, as the two veterans showed up the rest of the field.
Final places were as follows;
1st, JP Doran
2nd, Noel Carson
3rd= Enoch McCauley & Geoff Dale
Shooting continues at Rathfriland next Thursday, August 1.
The action commences at 6pm and all shooters are welcome.
