The Ulster Road Race Championships were promoted by Ballymoney CC on Sunday September 1 and this year saw one of the largest entries. The conditions were dry but cool however there was nothing cool about the racing which heated up from the start with a lot of riders on fire with determination to win, namely West Down Wheelers Darren Lynas.
Darren entered the Ulster Vets race which saw an early break with local man Mickey Carroll of Ballymena RC and Newry Wheelers’ hard man Kevin Lynch, but with so many good riders in this bunch it was hard for anyone to get away.
However before the sprint there was the tough uphill finish, it was Brian Stewart of Phoenix CC that would have the legs, the man who took Mark Cavendish in a sprint a few years ago, he crossed the line in fine form ahead of Jason Henry (U/A). In third place it was Darren Lynas of West Down Wheelers who took the bronze and for muscleman Lynas this was another fantastic achievement in this his first year of open racing. The members of West Down Wheelers pass on their congratulations to Darren.
