Local cycling superstar Mark Downey will this evening take on Europe’s elite live on Eurosport.

The Dromore man is off to the European Track Championships with Team Ireland and will begin their campaign tonight with the qualifying rounds of the four-kilometre Team Pursuit.

Mark will take to the track alongside ex World Champion Martyn Ervine, Felix English and Fintan Ryan and he reckons it will be a worthwhile exercise.

He said: “It’s a team that was put together five weeks ago so we are here for experience more so but if we all ride like we know we can, we will have a solid performance and go away with a good incentive for the following world cups.”

You can watch it all unfold on Eurosport from 6pm.

On Friday evening, Mark will also be live on the track, this time in his favourite race, the Points.

Hours before beginning the evnt in Grenchen, Switzerland, the Banbridge CC racer told the ‘LEADER’ he was already getting ‘butterflies’ but was delighted to have come through ‘a few bashes and crashes’ to make the Championships.

A ‘freak accident’ ended with the racer suffering a big cut down his side last month but he has “had a tough two weeks fighting back” to make sure he was fit for the Euros.
