Sean and Martin Trainor were the only bowlers in the championships who were “doubling up” i.e. in two finals.
They faced the unenviable task of a battle with defending champions Steven Shields and Jim Baker from Ballymena.
At the midpoint, the locals still had the upper hand at 11-8 and this was extended to 15-10 at the three quarter mark and a first title looked likely as they were playing the better bowls. With just three ends remaining, the scores were tied at 15-15 and it was effectively a three end game. A double on end 19 left the Trainors trailing for the first time in the game.
On the penultimate end, Shields produced his best end of the day and forced the Gilford brothers into playing with weight. The locals eventually lost a five and the title was lost.
