Bann’s unbeaten run brought to an end by Bredagh

Clann na Banna hosted Bredagh on Friday night at Cottage Park hoping to continue their good form in the league and make it four wins out of four for the Banbridge men.

The Clann were without M Magee who was replaced by M Loughlin but were boosted by the return of R Hill.

The Clann didn’t get off to the best start and found themselves trailing by four points inside the first five minutes after conceding an early goal and a well worked point from the right side of the post, which the Bredagh corner forward curled over the bar with the outside of the boot.

Gillen converted a free to get the Clann’s first score and close the gap to three points. Both sides had good spells of possession in the early stages but were unable to convert scoring chances.

Bredagh’s midfielder then won possession in the middle of the park and ran through to point from distance. Bredagh scored another point from a free kick just outside of the box. Clann won a free in the Bredagh half and Gillen played it quick to McArdle who took on his man down the line, played the ball back to Gillen who turned two defenders and pointed from play to close the gap to four points at the interval.

Clann started the second half brightly, McGrath breaking from the middle and winning a free which McArdle kicked over the bar to leave two points between the sides.

Bredagh found space in the Clann defence and were able to work the ball up the field and point from play to regain their three point lead. The Clann were battling hard to re-establish themselves, and were unlucky not to draw the game level when McArdle found space and saw his shot come back off the inside of the post.

As the second half went on, the Clann were giving away unnecessary frees and were being made to pay as Bredagh scored three points from free kicks and a further point from play to increase their lead to seven points.

The Clann were attacking well and pushing towards the end but were unlucky yet again as the Bredagh keeper made an excellent one on one save from Loughlin. Bredagh then killed the game off as they broke on the counter attack, passed the ball well and fisted the ball to the net to extend their lead to ten points. Gillen scored a late free for the Clann and Bredagh scored another free of their own to round off a bad day for Bann.
