SATURDAY 21ST FEBRUARY

John Poots could give us all a lesson on how to manoeuvre our way around a golf course.

He hits his drives straight and reasonably long. He never misses the fairway, which is a big advantage. His approaches to the greens are always accurate especially with the shorter irons.

But it is on the greens that John really excels. Last Saturday, he had to borrow a putter from his good friend Kenny Arlow, as he had accidentally broken his own.

His putting was phenomenal. I can vouch for that as I was playing with him.

John had three twos and that doesn’t happen too often. He holed a 12 footer at the 12th, another from 14 feet at the 15th and, to crown it all, he holed a putt from off the green at the 18th. If I hadn’t seen it myself, I would not have believed it.

You were brilliant, John! There is no other word for it.

THURSDAY 19TH FEBRUARY

Patrick McAleenan is enjoying a nice little purple patch as far as his golf is concerned. He won the Thursday Sweep a few weeks ago and here he is winning it again.

And he did it in some style, finishing five points clear of second placed Albert Morrison.

Enjoy your hot streak while it lasts, Patrick! You can rest assured it won’t last forever.

1st- Patrick McAleenan (24) 34 pts

2nd- Albert Morrison (19) 29 pts

SUNDAY 15TH FEBRUARY

Eugene Weir is without doubt one of the most consistent players in Banbridge Golf Club. He seems to be there or thereabouts in every single competition he plays.

Eugene played the nine holes of this Sunday Sweep in two under par gross and he won by half a shot.

Incidentally, there were notwo’s on the day so another rollover is building up.

1st- Eugene Weir (5) nett 31.5.

2nd- Darren Barker (18) Nett 32.

3rd- Brian Knox (20) Nett 32.
