THE Banbridge Sam Rutherford Cup team, captained by Shane McCrory, played Rockmount in the home leg of their first round match last Sunday afternoon.
These matches are played using the Greensomes format and are counted by holes up after 18 holes.
There are four pairings and a final score, holes up, of at least double figures is needed in the home leg.
Gareth Moody (7) and Neil Comiskey (10) got the local club off to the perfect start when they beat M. Lawther and D. Montgomery by 7 holes up.
Hugo Downey (9) and Barry Casey (9) were also in top form and they beat C. Child and F. Wallace 4 up.
Ryan Simpson (11) and Conor Mulholland (7) lost by one hole to a very strong Rockmount pairing of C. Montgomery and P. Banford.
The final game was crucial. Banbridge needed a big win to give them a cushion for the second leg.
Neville Kerr (10) and Mark McCoy (7) hardly put a foot wrong as they beat G. Poole and H. Moore by five holes up.
That puts Banbridge 15 holes up going into the second leg at Rockmount. It should be enough but you never know. We will not celebrate just yet.
