Legends go top of snooker league as Glenside struggle

The fight to win the league title continues this week with some surprising results at both ends of the table and a derby match thrown in from Lisburn for good measure as well.

The quest to be Lisburn League champions 2013 is the aim for last year’s runners up, the Legends, and they soared to the top of the table this week with a excellent 4-0 win over the Coach QS to show the rest of there title challengers they mean business.

It was the excellent Paul Lenfesty, who has still to lose a match this season, who got his team going with a 2-0 victory over Simon Lynch.

Chris Lenfesty made it 2-0 to the Legends with a 2-1 win over James Marmion and was followed up by his team mate David Payne who made it 3-0 to the Legends with a 2-1 victory over Stevie Nixon.

Last up for the Home side was the in-form Mark Magee who played very good snooker to beat QS Captain Joe Moreland 2-1 to give the Legends a much needed 4-0 victory and put them top of the league in pole position.

Next up we have Jim McGory’s Coach A team who are arguably the Legends closet challengers for the title. The Coach A showed they are going to fight all the way with a quite surprising but excellent 4-0 win over the Coach Knights which was their first defeat of the season so far.

That puts this victory in to perspective for the Coach A team as the Knights simply don’t normally lose, never mind being whitewashed.

Declan Duff got the team off to a good start as he defeated David Hall in a close game, finishing 2-1 to the young Coach A player.

Next up for Coach A was a new signing Alex Hoyle who impressed on his debut for the team as he beat the out of sorts Tommy Taylor which put the Coach A 2-0 at the halfway stage.

Stephen Magennis then made it 3-0 to the home side as he was to good for Damien McCambridge, winning the game 2-0.

Last up was Paul Sweeney who had to beat Knights captain John McCrea to secure the whitewash and he didn’t disappoint, winning 2-0 and keeping his team in a fight for the title.

Next up we have last week’s league leaders the Glenside who need to be careful as they have now had two draws in a row while there opponents are gaining a slight advantage.

The Glenside were hosts to the Outlaws this week and the match ended in a draw with the Outlaws having notched up some excellent results this season.

Charlie got the Glenside going with a 2-0 win over Kyle Lavery that and was quickly followed up by Jason Loyal who also won 2-0 with Adam Spence the loosing opponent.

Don Morrison just can’t seem to win a League match at the moment as he lost out to James Tearle, which made it 2-1 to the Glenside with one to play.

And last up for the Glenside was Ernie Cullen who needed three hours to lose his match against the up and coming Chris Ferguson which earned a hard fought draw for his team and two vital points, ending a frustrating night for the Glenside who need to get back to winning way quick before they see there title challenge fade away.

Next up we have the Lisburn Derby between Colours Ballymacash B and Colours Ballymacash A and what a night it was for the Colours B team as they defeated their A team 3-1 for the first time, grabbing their first victory of the season.

Colours B have nearly reached the same points tally they finished on last year and we are only halfway through the season which shows they are improving as each match goes on.

First up for the B team was Mick Straw who lost out to Colours A man Andrew Clarke 2-1 in a close game. But it was all the B team from then on in with wins from Dermot Donnovan and Ryan McCauchran both beating Rab Stevenson and Ian Stevenson respectively.

Last up for the home side was Tommy McCauchran who beat Stuart Moet 2-0 to earn his team their first win of the year and the bragging rights over there A team.

Next up we have the defending league champions The Highwaymen who have struggled so far this season but showed some promise as they defeated the Grinders 3-1.

With the incredible fight back the Highwaymen produced last year to win the league I don’t think anyone would count them out of the running just yet with still 40 points to fight for.

Gordon Boomer was first up for the home side and he would face Franky Soye with the highwayman winning the game 2-0 and didn’t even manage to concede a single point in the match against Franky who has been in good form this year. Paul Benson then made it 2-0 to the Highwaymen with a 2-0 win over Gerry McKeown and was quickly followed up by Davy Tate who destroyed Jerome Lenfesty 2-0 to put the Highwaymen 3-0 up with only the captain to play.

Colin Patterson was last up and was defeated in a close game by Brian Murray, the man with the golden pipe was to crafty as he grinded out a crucial point which keeps the grinders in touch with the top teams in the league.

The last match tonight is between the coach Terminater’s who would entertain Lisburn side The Legion Hotshots with the match finishing in a stale mate with both teams sharing the points a 2-2. Gary Townsley got back to winning ways as he beat Thomas Heasley 2-1 to get the terminaters of to a good start.

Darren Morgan couldn’t get past the very tough Cathy Pegg with the Hotshot’s lady winning 2-0. William Townsley then put the Terminators back in the lead with a 2-0 victory over Michael Ferguson.

New signing James Will lost his match 2-1 against the experienced Harry Gilliland which ended the match at 2-2 and a fair result it seemed all round. The Lisburn League Doubles starts on Monday February 18, All names must be in by Sunday February 17 at the very latest.
